Bariatric surgery is a transformative journey not just physically but mentally and emotionally. The decision to undergo bariatric surgery requires dedication and a serious commitment to lifelong lifestyle changes. A comprehensive psychological assessment is a critical step to ensure surgery candidates are ready for this life-altering procedure and is required by surgeons and/or insurance companies in order to determine readiness for the procedure.

This psychological assessment process goes beyond assessing physical readiness, delving into the emotional readiness and behavioral patterns that could influence post-surgery success. As an Associate Member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), I adhere to their guidelines and standards of best practices for conducting bariatric psychological assessments. Some elements include:

  • Understanding emotional health: Evaluates emotional well-being and behaviors affecting weight, like eating disorders or substance use/abuse.

  • Surgery and lifestyle awareness: Ensures patients understand the surgery's demands and the significant lifestyle changes needed.

  • Preparation for changes: Helps prepare patients mentally and emotionally for the journey ahead.

This evaluative step is a foundation for long-term success. It is not a "pass or fail" test. By conducting a thorough psychological evaluation, I am able to assist you and your surgical team to identify hidden mental health issues that could affect your surgery outcome and overall well-being. Early detection ensures that necessary interventions or support systems can be implemented, potentially increasing your surgery's success rate.

In addition to pre-bariatric surgery assessments, I offer the option to work with you before and/or after surgery if you are needing additional support related to stress, disordered eating, lifestyle changes, or mental health.

Trauma. Anxiety. Depression. Grief. High Conflict Relationships. All are overwhelming leaving people stuck in isolation, guilt, terror, shame, or confusion, altering one’s sense of self. I believe each one of us can be fulfilled in our lives, and that together we can find ways to remove obstacles and foster meaningful, lasting change.

I aim to create a space where you will feel unconditionally supported as we navigate thru not only specific symptoms, but also addressing your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. I believe in a holistic, trauma-informed, strengths-based approach to healing and draw upon solution-focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) based interpersonal and emotional regulation, somatic approaches based on identified needs, and other integrative mind-body interventions combining insight with action.

You will do some hard work, but you won’t be doing it alone. I will support you in recognizing your triggers, practicing healthier coping skills, and feeling more empowered in your life. In sessions you will be met with respect, kindness, unconditional positive regard, and the occasional dose of humor.

We all need a little help some times, and that’s what led you here. Not sure where to start? Reach out! I look forward to beginning your journey with you!

Divorce mediation is the process of discussing your disagreements with your spouse when you decide to get divorced. It is not marriage/couples counseling. Couples work with a mediator to amicably discuss their disagreements with the goal of negotiating an equitable outcome. I am a trained mediator, but I am not an attorney, and therefore cannot give you legal advice.

As a mediator I primarily consult on cases involving child custody issues and visitation schedules. In these situations, the couples agree to a mediation session to minimize the emotional damage on minor children and help keep sensitive matters private. The process is a lot less formal than working with a lawyer, and many people find it easier to communicate with each other in a mediated environment.

Mediation is based on effective communication. Mediation is not effective or productive if you aren’t speaking to each other. If emotions run high, you might want to take a few weeks to cool off and thoroughly assess your readiness and openness to the process before you begin mediation. If you and your spouse are in a place where you can communicate about vital subjects without animosity, divorce mediation is a beneficial solution for you.

Fee: $350 per hour
